Technical Surveillance Countermeasures (TSCM)

It is an undeniable fact that some unscrupulous companies will employ whatever means are available to gain an advantage in the marketplace.  Whilst electronic methods are usually the last resort to gather intelligence due to the resources required, they cannot be discounted.  A Risk Analysis will often identify the possibility of such an attack.  A reputable TSCM company will assist in analysing the threat and advising the correct level of inspection.

What Can Electronic Countermeasures Do For You?

The main aim of any security measure is to protect your assets.  TSCM audits are no different in this respect.  Rather than protecting against physical theft, TSCM audits are designed to detect intellectual property theft by covert means.

TSCM audits should provide you with a better appreciation of your security needs. Regular audits, if conducted properly and by the same auditors, will ensure a level of security commensurate to the needs of your company.

Whilst most companies do not publicise the fact that they engage the services of a TSCM Auditor, it should be considered as an integral part of Due Diligence and a deterrent to espionage.

Identifying Your TSCM Requirements

At the initial interview the client should discuss their reasons for requesting the audit and attempt to identify particular high risk areas. Risk Analysis is the most important part of any TSCM audit.  A properly conducted Risk Analysis allows the TSCM Auditor to identify areas of concern, formulate a strategy to provide the most effective audit and streamline the inspection process.

A company normally employs the services of a physical security company to identify access points and provide security at those points to prevent unauthorised access.  Experience shows, that with time, all security systems tend to become less effective due to complacency by both the security company and the client.  A TSCM audit will identify weaknesses in the client’s physical security.  To place a listening device within the target area, one has to normally be able to access that area.  It is futile to conduct a TSCM audit of an area that does not have sufficient physical security.
